Busy, Busy, Busy!

My goodness, it HAS been a while since I’ve checked in here.  All is well, and I’ve just been busy.  Here’s some of what’s been occupying my time over the past few months.

I’m a volunteer working gal!  I’ve been helping a younger extended family member get a new business up and running, and it’s mostly been lots of fun for me while helping them with some *much needed* advice from my own experiences in this area.  I’ve also had the opportunity to learn more in some things that peaked my curiosity, too.  I’m still involved in this effort, so it will continue to take some of my time each week for awhile until they are ready to take things over 100% on their own.

We celebrated Hubby’s 60th birthday the first week of October in Washington D. C.!  I have been there several times, but he had never been to see any of the great sights there.  It was a truly fabulous and memorable trip, and we were joined by some friends and our daughter from California.  While I still managed to get lots of great photos, I didn’t really focus on photography.  It was a time to just celebrate, enjoy our company and see the many great sights!  Early October was a great time to visit the area as the weather was perfect and crowds were light.

Hubby and I continue to travel by RV regularly for short trips, mostly returning to our favorite state parks.  We nearly froze to death in central Texas the week after Christmas this year, though, as a fairly epic icy cold blast hit and kept the temperatures below freezing for an extended period of time.  I think the lowest overnight temp was about 19 degrees, our coldest temp to date while camping in the RV.  BRRRRR!!!  That trip mostly broke my desire to go out on another winter RV trip this year.  Fortunately, another couple met us there for the duration of the trip, so we were able to pass some of the time sightseeing together, playing cards inside and sharing lots of good food.

Camping at Inks Lake State Park the week after Christmas was a *cold* experience!

However, we finally enjoyed a long weekend in the RV in early March in warmer weather that was just delightful.  It’s always good to go check on our favorite bison pals a couple of times each year!  On our most recent trip, two of these big ol’ guys surprised us while hiking on a trail at the bottom of the canyon, and we had to turn around when they didn’t budge.  Two more also darted out in front of us from behind some brush while we were walking on one of the main park roads and scared us to death, narrowly missing a pickup that was driving across the road, too.  That’ll wake you up!  We also enjoyed a great weekend at this park with several other couples back in October, too.

Without a doubt, there are *lots* of winter Texans around our area right now.  Just in the short time we were here, we saw eight RVs camped from out of state, with none of the states being close to Texas except Colorado.  Most were from the northeastern part of the country.  No doubt, this is just one of the reasons it’s getting harder and harder to get weekend RV sites in our area, pretty much year-round, along with increasing numbers of people in the state taking up RVing themselves.  Truly, it’s getting to be a huge issue for us, and we’re resigned now to booking sites months in advance, but that wasn’t even good enough on one occasion last year.  Bummer!  I cannot even begin to imagine how full-timers attempt to live in Texas now, unless they are satisfied to spending weekends in Wal-Mart parking lots.

There’s some big excitement coming up for us this summer, as we’re finally going to take my “big bucket list” trip in July!  I turn 60 in May, and June starts our 40th year of marriage together, with that anniversary coming in June 2019.  So, we are combining the celebration of these big milestones and taking one big trip this summer while things have seemingly worked out quite well for us to do that.  More to come later, but for now, I can definitely say it’s not at RV trip.  I think there is a very real possibility that neither of us may want to leave there, too.  And as we’ve worked on adjusting our allotted vacation days to do this, we’ve also discovered that taking two weeks off is actually something that is now feasible for us going forward, which is exciting in itself, if we want to do that in coming years prior to retirement.  We’ve never taken a two-week vacation since we’ve been married.

My neck issue is greatly improved since the procedure last summer, but in late January, I hurt my left hand, wrist, lower arm, most likely from lifting heavy boxes.  It’s most likely just a bad sprain, and I’ve been wearing an ugly black brace ever since.  It seems a bit better, but I think it’s going to just take time to heal, especially since I can’t really keep from using it regularly.

My apologies for not checking in with my favorite bloggers here over the past few months.  I guess there are times that I just need to put some things away to adequately focus on other areas, and this has been such a time.  I hope to catch up with you all soon, though.  And for my fellow RVers, we saw the RV Wanderlust couple’s RV on our most recent outing at Caprock Canyons earlier this month, as their website was shared on the front-end of their RV in our campground.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have a chance to meet them personally, as they pretty much pulled in right before we departed.  I don’t know if any of you have met them or not during your own travels.

I’ll try very hard to not take such long blogging breaks in the future!

  1. Nice to hear from you and that all is well. Yep, hasn’t been the best RV winter weather in Texas this year. Although I truly missed our usual TX sojourn, the weather in AZ has been wonderful. Can’t wait to hear about your upcoming trip to celebrate the big six oh …. eek, I share your birth year and will be hitting that number late summer. Where has the time gone?

    1. Oh good, I’m not the only one making the leap to the big 6-0 this year! haha Sounds like I’ll just get there sooner than you will. I hope you guys are enjoying life in warmer areas this winter, and maybe you can come back to the coast next winter? I promise to come by and check your blog soon. Life’s a bit crazy, crazy right now with the new biz I’m helping with.

    1. Well, I’m probably only back for just a bit. High season is looming for the new business, and who knows what all that’s going to bring! But, I think we’re in good shape, too. I’m excited to tell about our trip, once it gets closer! Still pinching myself about it all and just hope nothing comes up to keep us from making the trip. 😉

  3. Never feel bad doing what you need to do for yourself. As much as we missed you, we’ve all been there ourselves and know that sometimes life is more important than blogging!

I loved your post this time; usually do, but this one was special for a couple reasons.

I’m glad you talked about the difficulty of RV’ing in 19º weather. The coldest we ever had was 17º when we were in Oregon — that lasted 2 or 3 nights with temps rising to the 40’s during the day — but in fact that RV was not so much chilly throughout as it was noticeably drafty in certain places. We had ample furnace and electric heater capacity but 4 slides present a lovely opportunity for Momma Nature to stick her cold little fingers inside!

Your photo and the story about the bison made me wish we were both able to do more hiking these days. Our distances are limited and you don’t usually run into the best wildlife viewing opportunities too close to the parking lot — so I’m glad for you and enjoyed taht a little bit vicariously.

Good to hear about your DC trip. I’m afraid taht for us, big cities just aren’t all that appealing even if/when there is a lot of history to be enjoyed along with all the people. My last trip to DC was whilst driving a coach full of junior high school students on a spring break trip and 4 of them decided to ditch the chauffers (sp?) and hop a subway into VA to go shopping. The rest of 4 buses were frantic for 2 hours while everyone searched and fretted over where they’d gotten to — after that the “fun” of driving a motorcoach was dimished for me. Understandably my memories of DC are quite different.

I don’t suppose you had time to visit the National Botanic Gardens? They have a lovely bonsai collection — even this time of year when the trees have gone dormant a visit is interesting because you get to see those lovely old specimens sans foliage — quite a different take on bonsai!

Good luck on planning your trip. We reach 50 years in December and we haven’t really discussed what we might choose to do to celebrate. Have to put on our thinking caps.

Good to hear your voice again.

    1. Hey Peter! Hope you and Peg and well. Yes, the 19 degree temps showed us in detail any little drafty areas in our RV! haha Fortunately, we were pretty well prepared to deal with it, but geez, it was cold. We pulled our long slide in to help reduce the drafts and have less space to heat and also to protect the awning over the slide-out from the wind which was pretty brutal for awhile. We did go to the National Botanic Garden while we were in DC. We didn’t have time to stay very long, and it was pretty crowded, unfortunately. It was my fourth trip, so my friend and I knew the best places to take both husbands who had never been, and it was all we could do to try to hit most of those. But, we all had a fabulous time. Congrats on your big anniversary coming up, too! Yes, make plans to par-tay! 🙂

      1. LOL — pulling in the long slide DOES help, but it CAN GET COLD in them things!

After reading your post I had some article up that featured a photo of the Smithsonian and I thought for a few minutes about how wonderful the museum is, and how many great visits there are to make in that town, but I really can’t get excited about big cities any more. There are things I’d love to show Peggy that she’s never seen, but neither of us is big on cities and even though I would put up with it for her sake she wouldn’t be game so I don’t really need to do that again.

Interesting that you made the trip as a foursome. We have never had much luck finding couples we’d even want to ask about a group vacation. We have met up with other bloggers along the way for a short meet-up but never to travel together. Just not us but lots of people do it all the time. I had an uncle and aunt who traveled with the same party of 6 from WWII for 30years — another 2 week trip every year. But I can’t imagine doing that. Glad it’s a big, big world.

It’s funny, isn’t it, the way some of those RV experiences that were the hardest at the time are the ones that carry the fondest memories…. not sure why that is.

        1. I’m definitely recognizing that we are not getting any younger and going to try to get us to a few places while we can still get around pretty well by walking when needed. The friends that went with us to DC have been our best friends since 1980, before any of us even had kids. Even though they moved away years ago, we remain dear friends and always enjoy each other’s company. They stuck with us thru some rough times when others didn’t, and we will always treasure this God-given friendship for our entire lives. These days, we have so many friends that have their own RVs, we find ourselves with company on our trips more often than not. We’ve figured out a good way to work those trips, planning some “alone” time, too. Sure, traveling with others isn’t for everyone, but it’s lots of fun for us most of the time… making memories!
